SISTERS, FRIENDS

They were sisters and they were best friends. They were the incomparable centenarians, the Delaney sisters. When Bessie and Sadie Delaney published their memoirs in 1993, American readers rejoiced at the wit and wisdom of two women who had shared a hundred years together.

Bessie Delaney was the second African-American woman to be licensed to practice dentistry in New York. Sadie was the first black woman to teach domestic science in a New York high school. Both women were opinionated, insightful, and enthusiastic about life.

The Delaney sisters understood the importance of family and the importance of friendship. And they both understood (from personal experience) that a beloved family member and a best friend are often one and the same.
