When You Can't Fix It: St. Ambrose & Our Lady of Sorrows

Some things in life can't be fixed. A difficult diagnosis. Someone we love who is hurting. A loss we didn't expect. Even the smaller heartaches we carry quietly while the rest of life keeps moving.

Our instinct is often to do something - to solve it, make it better, or find the right words. But sometimes there aren't any. September brings us the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows and a beautiful reminder from Mary: sometimes love simply stays.

Mary Stayed

At the Crucifixion, many of Jesus' followers had scattered. Mary didn't.

St. Ambrose, one of the four great Latin Doctors of the Church, reflected on this simple but powerful detail:

“When the apostles fled, she stood at the Cross.”

Mary couldn't stop what was happening or take the suffering away. She could only remain close to Jesus. And maybe there is something here for us too. Not every painful situation needs an answer. Sometimes prayer is simply resting in God’s presence - or being present with someone who is hurting, knowing He is with us there too.

A Simple Prayer for This Month

When you're carrying something you can't fix, pause for just a moment. Take a breath and pray: Mary, help me stay close to Jesus in this.

That's it. That's enough. You can pray it in the car, beside someone's hospital bed, while making dinner, or in the quiet moments when something weighs on your heart.

One-Decade Rosary Reflection

Mystery: The Crucifixion

At the Cross, we see Jesus’ love poured out completely - and Mary faithfully remaining beside Him.

As you pray, picture Mary standing near the Cross. She cannot change what is happening. She simply stays with Jesus - in the middle of her sorrows.

With each bead, you might add, “Mary, help me stay close to Jesus.”

Offer this decade for whatever is weighing on your heart today.

Tip: Holding a simple, hand-knotted rosary can help anchor your prayer - one small knotted bead at a time.

If You Want to Go a Little Deeper

The traditional Seven Sorrows of Mary walk through seven moments of Mary’s life when she experienced fear, uncertainty, loss, and grief - from Simeon’s prophecy to laying Jesus in the tomb.

The Seven Sorrows Chaplet is one way to slowly pray through those moments with her. If this devotion is new to you, you can learn how to pray the Seven Sorrows Chaplet here.

And if you’d like a chaplet to pray with, you can see the handcrafted Seven Sorrows Chaplet here.

But you don’t have to begin with the whole devotion. One Hail Mary, one decade, or one quiet prayer in the middle of a hard day is enough to begin.

A Simple Invitation for September

This month, perhaps the invitation isn't to understand suffering. It's simply to stay close—to someone who needs you, to Mary when your own heart hurts, and most importantly, to Jesus.

Prayer doesn't always change the circumstances in front of us. Sometimes it simply reminds us that we don't face them alone.

And sometimes, that's exactly the grace we need.
