The Strength of Gentleness: St. Francis de Sales & the Sacred Heart of Jesus

June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus - the living sign of Christ’s love poured out for us. A heart that is patient, merciful, and never distant. A heart that meets us not after we’ve figured everything out, but right where we are.

And so this month, we turn to St. Francis de Sales, a Doctor of the Church whose writings reflect the very qualities of the Sacred Heart: gentleness, compassion, and steady love.

Why St. Francis de Sales for June?

St. Francis believed that God draws souls not through force, but through love. He wrote often about the patience of God and the importance of kindness - toward others and toward ourselves.

He taught that:

  • God is not harsh or demanding
  • Growth in holiness happens slowly
  • A gentle heart is a strong heart

His spirituality mirrors the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which is not distant or condemning, but open and welcoming.

One Quote to Carry This Month

"Nothing is so strong as gentleness; nothing so gentle as real strength." - St. Francis de Sales

Allow this truth to set in and shape how you move through today.

A 5-Minute Prayer Practice (Resting in Christ’s Heart)

This prayer is especially helpful when you feel overwhelmed or discouraged.
  1. Place a hand over your heart.
  2. Take one slow breath.
  3. Pray quietly: “Jesus, gentle and humble of heart, make my heart like Yours.”
  4. Offer Him one burden you’re carrying.
There is no need to explain or justify - just rest.

One-Decade Rosary Reflection

Mystery: The Agony in the Garden

In the garden, we see the Heart of Jesus fully exposed - sorrowful, obedient, and trusting.

As you pray this decade, reflect on:

  • Christ’s willingness to suffer out of love
  • His trust in the Father’s will
  • His closeness to us in our own struggles

On each bead, you may pray: “Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You.”

Offer this decade for moments when love feels heavy or costly.

Tip: Holding a simple, hand-knotted rosary can help anchor your prayer — one small knotted bead at a time.

A Simple Reminder for the Month

This June, let your prayer be gentle and consistent, not pressured or perfect.

A whispered prayer. A decade prayed in the car. A quiet moment resting in Christ's love.

St. Francis de Sales reminds us that holiness is not found in doing extraordinary things, but in doing ordinary things with great love and perseverance.

You do not need to have all the right words or a perfect prayer routine. You simply need to keep turning your heart toward God, one small step at a time.

Here at Knots of Grace, our hope is to help you keep prayer close - even when life feels full - because the reality is that God’s love never distances itself from us.
