Hidden — But Not Small: Lessons from St. Thérèse of Lisieux & St. Joseph

March often feels like a month of movement. Winter is letting go, spring is around the corner, and life slowly starts to pick up again — even in the midst of Lent, when the Church invites us to slow down, reflect, and trust God in the small things.

March is also dedicated to St. Joseph — a man who didn't speak much, but whose life shows us what steady faith and quiet trust looks like.

Joseph reminds us that holiness doesn't always need to be big or dramatic. Sometimes, it's simply showing up each day, carrying out our responsibilities, and quietly saying yes to God.

This month, we're also guided by St. Thérèse of Lisieux, a Doctor of the Church known for her "Little Way" — doing small things with great love. Though she is often remembered for her childlike trust in God, she also lived a hidden life of sacrifice, patience, and perseverance — much like St. Joseph.

Hidden, but Not Small

In different ways, both Saint Joseph and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux show us something essential about holiness.

We don't know Joseph's personality. Scripture doesn't record his words. What we do see is his faithfulness — his quiet obedience, his steady protection of Mary and Jesus, his willingness to act when God asked.

Thérèse's life was also hidden. But because she left us her words, we glimpse her humanity — her sensitivity, her humor, her intensity, and even her struggles. She did not become holy by losing her personality. She became holy by offering it.

Joseph models obedient action. Thérèse models interior surrender.

Both reveal the same truth: holiness often unfolds quietly — in daily trust, in unseen sacrifice, in choosing love when nobody notices.

Lent invites us into this same hidden space.

  • Not dramatic gestures.
  • Not spiritual performance.
  • But steady obedience. Interior surrender.

A quiet "yes" when it would be easier to complain. A small sacrifice offered without being seen.

Like Joseph.
Like Thérèse.

Hidden — but never small.

One Quote to Carry This Month

“Miss no single opportunity of making some small sacrifice, here by a smiling look, there by a kindly word; always doing the smallest right and doing it all for love.” — St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Keep this close this month. You might jot it on a sticky note, save it on your phone, or whisper it to yourself when you're tempted to rush or grow impatient.

Lent doesn't have to be dramatic to be transformative. Often, it's built bead by bead.

A Quick Prayer for Busy Days

When your day feels full:

  1. Pause wherever you are.
  2. Hold your rosary, even just for a moment.
  3. Quietly say: “St. Joseph, teach me to trust. St. Thérèse, teach me small acts of love."
  4. Offer one small inconvenience or responsibility to God.

No long prayers needed. Just a simple moment of love.

One-Decade Rosary Reflection

Mystery: The Nativity

Joseph welcomed Jesus into the world without knowing what would happen next. He didn't have all the answers — he simply trusted God and did his part.

As you pray this decade, think about:

  • Joseph's quiet courage
  • His willingness to act, even in uncertainty
  • His steady presence with Mary

On each bead, you might say:
“St. Joseph, teach me to trust.”

Offer this decade to your work, your family, and the small, unseen responsibilities you carry every day.

Tip: Holding a simple, hand-knotted rosary can help anchor your prayer — one small knotted bead at a time.

A Simple Invitation for the Month

This March, let prayer be steady, not flashy.

  • A quiet decade when you first wake up.
  • A small sacrifice offered without announcing it.
  • A whispered "yes" in a hard moment.

Like St. Joseph and St. Thérèse, holiness grows quietly.

At Knots of Grace, we believe prayer doesn’t need perfect conditions. Sometimes it simply begins with a single bead, a whispered word, and a willing heart.
