When Althea Gibson was born in South Carolina, the odds against her winning a Wimbledon championship were about a billion to one. But apparently no one told her. In an era where African-Americans weren't even allowed to play on most tennis courts, Gibson fashioned herself into a champion. She practiced whenever she could, and when Althea was finally allowed to play, she was ready. She won the French Open, the U.S. Open, and Wimbledon.
Althea Gibson's life reminds us that failure is always the path of least persistence. So if you're facing long odds, remember the story of a young girl, without a court to play on, who didn't know she couldn't do it ... so she did. And so, for that matter, can you.
