St. Bernard & The Holy Name: A Rest from the January Rush
The world tells us that January is for hustling—for setting big goals, starting new routines, and doing more.
But the Church invites us to something different. She dedicates this month to the Holy Name of Jesus—a devotion that reminds us we don’t need many words (or perfect plans) to pray. Sometimes, one Name is enough.
This month, we’re praying with St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a Doctor of the Church whose love for the Name of Jesus was personal, familiar, and deeply reassuring.
A Moment of Grace
Join me for a short video reflection on this week's theme.
Why St. Bernard for January?
St. Bernard didn’t write only for scholars in ivory towers. He wrote for people navigating the distractions and weariness of real life.
For Bernard, the Name of Jesus wasn’t an abstract theological idea. It was a prayer to return to throughout the day. He noticed how speaking that Holy Name could:
- Bring a sense of calm to an anxious heart
- Shine light in moments of confusion
- Offer strength when he felt weak
He treated the Name of Jesus like a sturdy anchor—something to carry with him, gently guiding his heart back to God again and again.
One Quote to Carry This Month
“The Name of Jesus is honey in the mouth, music in the ear, joy in the heart, and medicine for the soul.”
— St. Bernard of Clairvaux
You might write this on a sticky note for your mirror, save it as your phone background, or just whisper it when the noise of the day gets too loud.
Or, if that feels like too much to remember, simply hold onto this powerful one-word prayer: Jesus.
A Micro Prayer Practice (For Busy Days)
-
Take a breath.
-
Slowly say the Name Jesus.
-
With each repetition, let go of one worry.
-
If your mind wanders, gently return to His Name.
One-Decade Rosary Reflection
Mystery: The Annunciation At the Annunciation, Mary hears a Name spoken for the first time: “You shall name Him Jesus.”
As you pray this decade, imagine the quiet of that moment. God entered the world not loudly, but gently. On each bead, you may pray: “Jesus, I trust in You.”
Let this decade be less about "finishing" and more about resting.
(Note: If you find that holding something tactile helps keep your mind focused, our Hand-Knotted Pocket Rosaries are designed for exactly this kind of prayer—durable, simple, and ready to be carried.)
A Simple Invitation for the Month
This January, don’t aim for perfect prayer. Aim for frequent return.
Each time you touch your rosary—especially a single decade—let it be a reminder that the Holy Name of Jesus is always near, always available, and always enough.
At Knots of Grace, our hope is simple: that even in busy moments, prayer can remain close at hand—steady, durable, and rooted in Christ.
